Finally we arrived at St Marie by St Nazare where we joined up with a crowd of British soldiers including many of our own Regiment. We were billeted for the night in a huge old water mill and looking out of the window from the first floor I noticed a dozen or more dead bodies floating in a lake, they were inflated like balloons. Here I joined a volunteer party, well armed, to go right back to our gun position in Northern France to retrieve our guns where the Germans were in occupation and liable to attack. We were very lucky experiencing limited contact with the enemy who so recently had driven the bulk of our Army into the sea at Dunkirk.
