The War Diary of the Headquarters of 12th AA Brigade of which the 53rd HAA Regiment was a part, recorded the following for January 1940:
Weather during the month was bad, extreme cold, a temperature of -20F, being experienced. Snowfall up to 6 inches and ice on roads made motor transport movement difficult. Much influenza - difficult to man guns.
